Making a music video
For my FMP I will be creating a music video, a logo to
promote my company and posters to allow me to get the public to know about the
video. The reason I had chosen these 3 ideas is due to the fact I enjoy
creating videos and experimenting with a range of lighting. This would allow me
to put both skills together to create a music video. I also decided to create a
logo and a few posters, this is due to the fact of that it is important to
promote a video in a variety of ways to the public. A logo will also give
credit to the video producer. I have good knowledge of all three software’s
needed to be used which are Photoshop, Premier Pro and InDesign.
Before starting any production, I need to start doing
research into:
1. Effects
in music videos
2. Different
music video creators
3. Lighting
4. Equipment
5. Locations
6. Target
audience
7. Story
boarding ideas
A music video is a video created to follow a song created by
an artist. These are created so that their audience can understand the lyrics
more and allowing it to be easier to understand. It should also suit the artist
and be visually interesting include effects, props and much more. I also want
to create a music video due to the fact of most videos which are being created
nowadays include violence, drugs, money and the over sexualisation of females.
I wanted to create a music video which doesn’t include any of that. This is
because the target audience I have chosen to have been labelled the menaces of
society. I wanted to create a music video which doesn’t have anything negative
in it.
Lighting
for music videos
During my years doing media I have learnt lots of different
ways to setup lights and which ones would be the best. I have chosen a few
which I will be using in my FMP I different areas of my work to allow me to get
the best quality and lighting.
3-point lighting.
The first lighting setup I have chosen is 3-point lighting.
This is when 3 different lights are used but for 3 different reasons.
For 3-point lighting you need one light which will be called
the key light, this light will be the strongest out of all the lights used.
This is because the light will be places right in front of the actors to
brighten the front of them.
The second light is called the fill light, this light is
used mostly to fill in any shadows of the actors. This light will not be as
bright as the key light as its main purpose is to cover the shadows created by
the person.
The last light which will be used in this setup will be a
back light. This light creates a soft glow in the background. Its places above
or below the actors but out of shot.
Audience
Finding my target audience was a struggle as I music is
listened to by everyone, but grime music is listened to by young teenagers and
young adults. This is why I had to research into what people listen to what
type of music and why they do.
As my project is a music video and posters, I think that my
target audience will be young teenagers and young adults. My target audience of
this will be 16-25-year olds. I have given myself a range like that due to the
fact of what type of music I will be using in the music video and what age of
people listen to it now. Currently grime music is mostly listened to by 14-year
olds to 28 year olds. This is because of the age of the artists. The reason why
I feel like this is an amazing range for my product as teenagers only want to
see things which appeal to them. I personally think that if my target audience
was any higher people wouldn’t like to see music videos and look at posters.
The music industry has grown a lot in the UK. It has £5.2
billion in the British economy in the UK in 2018. A genre called grime music
has been climbing up the ladder in the last 2 decades. Bringing many artists
from all backgrounds and music genres wanting to create music together.
The Importance of music videos is the way they are created
for the audience to see. This is because music videos show what the lyrics don’t.
This is from little words that people don’t understand too things which have an
actual effect in the music and the lyrics.
Equipment
For a video it is
best to choose the best equipment that is available to you. I have chosen
equipment that I find easily assessible to me and its equipment which I
understand how to use. This is equipment I have both at home and in college
which I can use. The equipment I will be using in the creation of a
music video will be:
A canon 5d mk3 this is because I feel comfortable enough and
know how to use a camera like this. I also enjoy creating videos with this
camera as it’s easy to use.
A wheel will also be used to allow you to get a few shots in
which you want the camera to be stead enough but also want the camera to move
side to side without adding lots of shake to the video.
A tripod might be needed to be used in some shots which will
be recorded outside. This will be easier to use and more stable when it comes
to certain shots when I want the camera in one position and not to move.
LED Lights can be used for creating an atmosphere and allowing
the lighting to decide the theme.
Gels for lights will let you decide the theme and atmosphere
I want for certain shots. This will let me make some shots grimmer and scarier
by using colours which signify blood and gore.
Smoke bombs will be used in a few shots this will be used as
a prop and
Car flares may be used just depending on if they are needed
in the video or if I could have better ideas without it.
Other producers would use equipment such as drones, planes
and special effects.
Software’s
Nowadays many video producers will be using the following software’s.
The first software is Photoshop I will be using this to edit any pictures which
I will use on my posters and also create my logo on that. I will also be using
premier pro this will be used for the editing of my music video. This software
will allow me to add any effect I need to add. The final software I will be
using is InDesign to create my posters. I choose to use InDesign as I have a
great knowledge of the software already. For this project I will be using 3
major software which will be used in conjunction with each other.
Primary and secondary research
For primary research I will be doing things such as
questionnaires and interviews. The reason why I choose to do questionnaires is
due to the fact some people don’t want to be interviewed and also that
questionnaires can be handed out to the general public to get quick and easy input.
My secondary research will be done by me watching
documentaries and also watching YouTube videos on music videos and music
artists. I feel this would be the best secondary research as there’s many
documentaries based on music and how music effects people’s lives.
Influences
I have three people which have inspired my work these 3
people are:
Kid Art is an American based music video director. He is an
upcoming music video director and has produced 4 different videos for 3
different artists. One of his best music videos he has produced was weatherman
Kodak Black.
Christian
Breslauer is a young ambitious director. He was born in South Florida where he
was working hard and built his name from there. He started videoing Miami’s
hottest artists. He then moved to LA in 2016 to continue creating mainstream
music videos for his best artists. The artists he has done work for are Chris
Brown, Marshmello, Migos and Roddy Ricch. One of his music videos which he has
created for an artist called Roddy Ricch called Tip Toe. The reason why this is
one of my favourite music videos is due to the fact of the effects used. There are
many effects which I want to learn how to do and put that into my work for my
FMP. One effect which was created in Roddy Ricch’s music video Tip Toe is
called the liquid effect. This effect made solid items turn into liquid.
CJ Wallis is a Canadian director from Vancouver. He has released
over 100 music videos for some of the biggest artists in the industry today and
also have done 5 feature films. He started his career in 2006 and is still
going strong and is getting more business. He also has been given 10 different
awards and nominations for his music videos and his movies. CJ Wallis has done
music videos for 22 mainstream artists. These are a few names which he has done
music videos for: Rick Ross, Wiz Khalifa, TY Dolla $ign and 2 Chainz.
Conclusion
I have many contacts in the music industry. I know a few British
artists in the UK and also, I know a few music video creators in the UK. These
are people which started from scratch with no one behind them, but they created
a business and now shoot for famous British artists. This is my dream one day
to create music videos for artists based all around the world.
My intentions are researching into music videos which don’t promote
negative behaviour. Some music videos in these last two decades promoted
negative behaviour between groups of people. They also include drugs, violence,
guns and over sexualisation of females. I want to make sure my music videos don’t
promote negative behaviour as my target audience is 14-25.
